Rocinha's Sport Complex
In 2005 the State Government of Rio de Janeiro promoted a Competition for Ideas for the urbanization of Rocinha, organized by the local Institute of Architects (IAB-RJ). The winning team, coordinated by architect Luiz Carlos Toledo, developed during the following three years the Spatial and Social Master Plan for Rocinha. For this assignment, the company set up an office in the favela with the objective of increasing to the maximum the participation of residents in the implemention the plan.
The Sports Complex, the extension of Rua 4 (4th Street), the Park Library (C4) and a nursery, among dozens of interventions recommended in the Master Plan have been effectively implemented with state and federal funds (PAC 1). The Sports Complex, located next to the CIEP Ayrton Senna is connected to the favela by a walkway designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer.
The center consists of a large plate equipped with a soccer field, a semi-Olympic pool, indoor gym, high performance judo center, skate park, changing rooms and administrative areas. In the space under this plate there are parking lots, box-practice, weight lifting and gymnastics facilities, a handicraft store and a police station.
